Why You Should Consider an Employee Assistance Program

Team morale and satisfaction are a couple of the most essential elements of any business. Helping manage your team members’ happiness may seem like it is outside of your realm of responsibility as an employer. However, personal issues and job dissatisfaction can impact an employee’s performance, productivity, and focus. The last thing you want is for your business to suffer avoidable consequences.

So how can you help your employees? The answer is simple: by giving back. A great way to provide help, support, and resources is through employee assistance programs (EAP).

What is an Employee Assistance Program?

Employee Assistance Programs are delivered as a no-cost workplace wellness program with services to help workers deal with any personal issues they may be facing. This can include a wide variety of things, including:

  • Alcohol or substance abuse
  • Financial concerns
  • Grief
  • Marital, relationship, or family concerns
  • Mental health issues
  • Stress and stress management and more.

Most EAPs offer access to trained counselors, in a private, safe place on the employee’s terms. These counselors are trained to discuss sensitive issues while maintaining confidentiality. This means that anything shared during an EAP counseling session is completely private and cannot be shared with the employer without explicit permission from the team member. The EAP offers direct counseling and treatment rather than a mere referral to another practitioner.

Adding access to EAPs to your benefits package is a great way to show support for workers from all walks of life. As an employer, you can benefit from EAPs, too.

Advantages for Employees (and Employers!)

EAPs have provided employees access to an all-encompassing resource to navigate personal issues that can affect them in their everyday lives as well as their work lives. A well-structured EAP can greatly help your team members reduce their stress levels and get back to their normal levels of productivity: both at home and on the clock. Not only does this contribute to a positive company culture, but it creates happier employees overall. Plus, when you offer helpful perks like this in your employees’ benefits packages, you are showing that their wellbeing matters to you. This is a great way to build mutual respect and trust on your team.

The stressors of everyday life, no matter how minute or extreme, can be difficult to bear alone. With EAP services, employees are able to have easy access to cost-effective care and support for a wide array of issues.
