Remote employee burnout is real. Can you see the signs?
Assuring your employees working remotely aren’t burnt out is essential to the smooth operation of your business. However, this is easier said than done –spotting employee burnout signs can prove to be a difficult task.
In an effort to make this task a bit easier for you, we created a free remote employee burnout checkup builder for you to use as a tool to help pinpoint your employees’ burnout signs.
But, before we get into finding the burnout signs, it may help to define burnout and explain what it doesn’t look like. Firstly, the World Health Organization (WHO) included burnout in its 11th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD–11) as an occupational phenomenon. According to the WHO, burnout is a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.
If your employees are showing up to work energetic and ready to take on the day, more times than not, they are not exhibiting burnout signs. So, now that we know what burnout is and what it isn’t, how do we recognize what the signs are?
It goes without saying that all you employees are different… they all respond to stress differently and they all handle stress differently. Because of this, you need to assess each employee, whether it be face–to–face or anonymously.
One of the easiest ways to do this is by simply asking.
Our checkup builder is loaded with questions for you to ask your employees about what could be troubling them. With 15 questions in total, you can have your employees anonymously complete the questionnaire by answering one of the following for each question:
1. Not at All
5. Very Often
After answering all of the questions and receiving a score, each employee will be placed into one of five categories that explain just how burnt out they are.
Now you may be thinking, “If this checkup is anonymous, how can I spot my employees’ burnout signs?”. The great part about this checkup is that while each employee answers the same question, oftentimes having very different responses, it gives you a great overview of how burnt out your entire workforce is.
It would be nearly impossible to cater to each burnout sign portrayed by each employee. A study conducted by Gallup of approximately 7,500 full–time employees concluded found that 23% of employees reported feeling burned out at work very often or always, while an additional 44% reported feeling burned out sometimes.
Combined, that’s 67% of employees reporting different levels of burnout. If you want to help your employees with their feelings of burnout, consider looking at the signs that are affecting your general workforce.
I can spot the signs of employee burnout. What now?
When you get to the point of identifying the prominent burnout signs in your workforce, you’ll be able to accurately determine what changes need to be made and how. These changes don’t need to be drastic—some can be rather simple.
For example, showing more appreciation can go a long way. You can even conduct more frequent employee reviews to help spot burnout signs moving forward.
Employee burnout is not a one–and–done situation. With varying levels of workloads and stress, your employees can become burnt out at any time—and it’s important to stay on top of it.
We’ve helped countless businesses with all of their HR needs –this includes identifying burnout signs, conducting employee reviews, and providing resources to help when immediate assistance is needed. You’ll find that our free remote employee burnout checkup builder will be a great asset for your business, just like it has been for many others.
