Remote employee burnout is real. Can you see the signs?

Assuring your employees working remotely aren’t burnt out is essential to the smooth operation of your business. However, this is easier said than done spotting employee burnout signs can prove to be a difficult task.

But, before we get into finding the burnout signs, it may help to define burnout and explain what it doesn’t look like. Firstly, the World Health Organization (WHO) included burnout in its 11th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD11) as an occupational phenomenon. According to the WHO, burnout is a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.
If your employees are showing up to work energetic and ready to take on the day, more times than not, they are not exhibiting burnout signs. So, now that we know what burnout is and what it isn’t, how do we recognize what the signs are?
It goes without saying that all you employees are different… they all respond to stress differently and they all handle stress differently. Because of this, you need to assess each employee, whether it be facetoface or anonymously.
One of the easiest ways to do this is by simply asking.

It would be nearly impossible to cater to each burnout sign portrayed by each employee. A study conducted by Gallup of approximately 7,500 fulltime employees concluded found that 23% of employees reported feeling burned out at work very often or always, while an additional 44% reported feeling burned out sometimes.
Combined, that’s 67% of employees reporting different levels of burnout. If you want to help your employees with their feelings of burnout, consider looking at the signs that are affecting your general workforce.

When you get to the point of identifying the prominent burnout signs in your workforce, you’ll be able to accurately determine what changes need to be made and how. These changes don’t need to be drastic—some can be rather simple.
