November 2021: Iowa Allowing Exemptions for COVID-19 Vaccine and Fired Workers to Collect Unemployment Benefits

What happened?

On October 29, 2021, Governor Reynolds signed House File 902 (HF 902) into law.

What are the details?

Effective immediately, HF 902 allows workers to be exempt from the COVID-19 vaccination mandate for either religious or medical reasons. The new law also allows former employees who were fired for breaking the vaccination mandate to qualify for unemployment benefits.

What do employers need to do?

Employers should review the information above and make changes to their vaccination policies to comply with this law while it is in effect.

Effective July 1, 2020, employers cannot inquire about a job applicant’s criminal records on a job application. In addition, employers with 15 or more employees may not ask an applicant about the previous criminal activity before making a conditional employment offer. Employers may discuss the criminal record if voluntarily disclosed by the applicant during a job interview.
