June 2022: Alameda County, California Reinstates Mask Mandate

Update Applicable to:
All businesses with public indoor areas in Almeda County, California.

What happened?
On June 2, 2022, the Alameda County Public Health Department announced that face coverings would once again be required in most indoor settings.

What are the details?
Effective June 3, 2022, Indoor public settings such as workplaces and offices are required to enforce everyone two years of age and older to wear a mask, regardless of their vaccination status.

Below is a list of businesses and public buildings to which the mandate will apply:

  • Indoors at businesses, government offices, youth-serving facilities (except K-12 school settings through the end of the 2021-22 school year), and workplace settings
  • On trains, buses, ferries, taxis, and ride-shares
  • In transportation hubs like bus terminals, train stations, marinas, seaports or other ports, subway stations, or any other area that provides transportation
  • Healthcare settings
  • State and local correctional facilities and detention centers
  • Shelters and cooling centers

The following individuals are exempt from wearing masks at all times:

  • Children under two years old, due to the risk of suffocation
  • People with:
    • A medical condition, 
    • Mental health condition, or 
    • A disability that precludes wearing a mask. This includes individuals:
      • For whom a mask could obstruct breathing
      • Who are unconscious or incapacitated 
      • Who are unable to remove a mask without help
  • People for whom seeing the mouth is essential for communication:
    • Hearing impaired, or 
    • Those communicating with a person who is hearing impaired
  • People for whom wearing a mask would create a risk as they work, as determined by:
    • Local, state, or federal regulators, or 
    • Workplace safety guidelines
