The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Vermont Department of Taxation (DOT) have extended the filing for federal individual and business tax payments through February 3, 2025.

IRS Tax Relief for Hurricane Debby

The IRS has extended tax relief for individuals and businesses in Vermont affected by Hurricane Debby.

  • Affected Areas: All 14 counties in Vermont.
  • Extended Deadlines: The new deadline for filing federal individual and business tax returns and making tax payments is February 3, 2025.

This extension provides relief to those affected by the hurricane, giving them additional time to manage their tax obligations.

  • The IRS automatically identifies taxpayers located in the covered disaster area and applies for filing and payment relief.
  • Affected taxpayers outside the covered disaster area should call the IRS disaster hotline at 866-562-5227 to request this tax relief.

Specific Deadlines and Penalties

  • Individuals: Those with a valid extension to file their 2023 return due on October 15, 2024, now have until February 3, 2025, to file. Note that tax payments related to these 2023 returns were due on April 15, 2024, and are not eligible for this relief.
  • Businesses: Calendar-year partnerships and S corporations with 2023 extensions running out on September 16, 2024, and calendar-year corporations with extensions running out on October 15, 2024, now have until February 3, 2025, to file.
  • Quarterly Payments: The deadline also applies to quarterly estimated tax payments due on September 16, 2024, and January 5, 2025, as well as quarterly payroll and excise tax returns due on October 31, 2024, and January 15, 2025.
  • Penalties: Penalties on payroll and excise tax deposits due on or after August 8, 2024, and before August 23, 2024, will be abated if the deposits are made by August 23, 2024.

Department of Taxes (DOT) Relief for Employers

The DOT is not automatically extending due dates for state taxes for employers affected by Hurricane Debby. However, employers impacted by flooding and unable to meet filing and/or payment deadlines between August 8, 2024, and February 3, 2025, can request extensions by contacting the DOT at:
