Beginning January 1, 2025, a new Paid Prenatal Personal Leave (PPPL) policy, which has been added to Section 196-b of the New York Labor Law, also known as the New York State Paid Sick Leave Law.
- This policy mandates that employers provide at least 20 hours of paid prenatal personal leave each year, in addition to the existing statutory paid sick leave entitlement.
- Employers cannot require the disclosure of confidential information related to a mental or physical illness, injury, condition, or a sexual offense as a condition for granting this leave.
- Additionally, employers are prohibited from penalizing, discriminating, or retaliating against employees for requesting or taking such leave.
Employers should update their employee handbook leave policies to comply with the new addition and notify their workforce of the new policy addendum to existing employees.
